Meet your counselors:
Ms. Harkey works with the 6th - 9th grade students at ERA, which means she spends her time on both campuses! Curriculum and classroom lessons during these years include Digital Citizenship, Mental Health Literacy, and the high school transition. The foundation of Ms. Harkey's individual counseling is Solution-Focused Brief counseling, which encourages students to picture ideal outcomes and make change in the direction of their goals. Ms. Harkey also works with AP Coordination, master scheduling, and assists with test coordination.
Ms. Harkey attended UNC - Chapel Hill for both her undergraduate and graduate programs (B.S. Psychology c/o 2011, M.Ed. School Counseling c/o 2014) and came to ERA in 2022 after spending eight years in Durham Public Schools.
In her free time, Ms. Harkey can be found chasing her 3- and 1-year old children, reading, and cooking.
Mr. Schaffer works with the 10th-12th grade students at ERA, as well as the high school college counselor. The foundation of Mr. Schaffer's individual counseling is Solution-Focused Brief counseling, which encourages students to picture ideal outcomes and make change in the direction of their goals. Mr. Schaffer also works with advisory, scheduling, community college CCP program coordination, graduation planning, post secondary planning, and internship opportunities.
Mr. Schaffer attended University of Delaware for his undergraduate program (B.A in Psychology c/o 2005) and has an M.Ed. in both School Counseling (West Chester University of Pennsylvania c/o 2010) and Special Education (Brooklyn College c/o 2014). He spent three years teaching and five years as a school counselor in New York City Public Schools. He has been at Eno River Academy since 2019 as a high school counselor.
In his free time, Mr. Schaffer enjoys cooking, hiking, house projects, and watching his beloved Eagles
Ms. Shepard works with the K–5th grade students at ERA. Her daily activities include one-on-one check-ins with students, leading small groups focused on social skills, and facilitating classroom lessons on various topics such as conflict resolution, emotional identification and regulation, responsible decision-making, self-awareness, social awareness, and goal setting. The foundation of her individual counseling approach is rooted in Person-Centered and Solution-Focused Brief counseling, empowering students to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and make choices that align with their values. Ms. Shepard also coordinates 504 plans for K–12 students, ensuring they receive the support needed to thrive academically and emotionally.
Ms. Shepard earned her B.S. in Psychology and Human Development from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay in 2017 and recently completed her M.A. in School Counseling at the University of Denver in 2024. This is her first year at ERA, and she is excited to continue growing with the school community in the years to come.
Outside of her professional life, Ms. Shepard enjoys spending time with her husband, hiking, reading, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers—Go Pack Go!
